In mid-January 2023, the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct will undergo a second community-wide ratification vote. This follows the March 2022 vote, which resulted in a majority of voters supporting the Enforcement Guidelines. During the vote, participants helped highlight important community concerns. The Board’s Community Affairs Committee requested that these areas of concern be reviewed.

The volunteer-led Revisions Committee worked hard reviewing community input and making changes. They updated areas of concern, such as training and affirmation requirements, privacy and transparency in the process, and readability and translatability of the document itself.

How to vote?

Beginning January 17, 2023, voting will be open. This page on Meta-wiki outlines information on how to vote using SecurePoll.

Who can vote?

The eligibility requirements for this vote are the same as for the Wikimedia Board of Trustees elections. See the voter information page for more details about voter eligibility. If you are an eligible voter, you can use your Wikimedia account to access the voting server.

What happens after the vote?

Votes will be scrutinized by an independent group of volunteers, and the results will be published on Wikimedia-l, the Movement Strategy Forum, Diff and on Meta-wiki. Voters will again be able to vote and share concerns they have about the guidelines. Universal Code of Conduct revised enforcement guidelines vote results

The recent community-wide vote on the Universal Code of Conduct revised Enforcement Guidelines has been tallied and scrutinized. Thank you to everyone who participated.

After 3097 voters from 146 Wikimedia communities voted, the results are 76% in support of the Enforcement Guidelines, and 24% in opposition. Statistics for the vote are available. A more detailed summary of comments submitted during the vote will be published soon.

From here, the results and comments collected during this vote will be submitted to the Board of Trustees for their review. The current expectation is that the Board of Trustees review process will complete in March 2023. We will update you when their review process is completed.

The vote on the Enforcement Guidelines in January 2023 showed a majority approval of the Enforcement Guidelines. There were 369 comments received and a detailed summary of the comments will be published shortly. Just over three-thousand (3097) voters voted and 76% approved of the Enforcement Guidelines. As the support increased, this signifies to the Board that the current version has addressed some of the issues indicated during the last review in 2022. The Board of Trustees voted to ratify the Enforcement Guidelines. However, I would propose a small variation of the rule, for example Goethe not to be written as Gyote, but Gete, and a preference on the exact phonetic transliteration rather than Russian-based transliteration (e.g. not Si Szinpin because of Russian, but Si Tsinping instead, this is the true pronounciation). For comparation in Greek, which is written with non-Latin alphabet, we always try to transliterate exactly, rather based in a certain form (for example, as a Greek analogue for Gyote-style transliterations, we used to write Γκρ?χαμ, but now Γκρ?ιαμ is prefered for Graham). Thus, I am in favor of the change, with minor variations from the general rule for exact transliteration of the names (e.g. Oskar Uayld and Shi Tsinping rather than Si Szinpin).     Writing Goethe as Gete is an even worse idea. Nobody spells it as Gete in Uzbek. An Uzbek speaker would pronounce it as /?g?t.?/. Currently nearly everyone using the Uzbek Latin script simply spells it as Gyote. Nataev ^munozara 15:19, 20-Aprel 2023 (UTC)

    In Greek, for comparison we pronounce it like /'ge.te/, while Gyote is pronounced /'gjo.te/, and Gete is closer to the actual pronounciation. A critique on the WikiOromgoh-related article growth

WikiOromgoh is a admirable project for Uzbek Wikipedia. In the three editions that have ran, nearly 40,000 articles have been produced totally. It has been also a tool to introduce new contributors to the rapidly expanding Uzbek project.

However, I have observed some significant problems regarding the way that WikiOromgoh's article creation is done. At first, I see that the most new articles are about villages in Uzbekistan, Turkey or another country. This is not good. It is reality that it aids the faster growth in Uzbek Wikipedia, however the gain of Uzbek Wikipedia in pageviews will be marginal at best, because no one will read this articles (the same thing happens in Greek Wikipedia for such articles). Example is here, where we can see that 2,216 Tajikistan-related geographical stubs yield only 1,795 pageviews in the last twenty days, of which only 19 more than ten. Also, this type of article creation is not very different from a robot, and in the most Wikipedias this type of growth has eclipsed due to quality concerns.

The participants should give emphasis on expanding existing articles and write the notable missing articles. There are 37,974 pages for expansion. There is no page about adolescence or Visakhapatnam, city of India with more than 1,6 million residents. That articles give a really good amount of pageviews. Thus the camp should give more emphasis in article expansion and vital article creation. This text is just a proposal to improve the concept of WikiOromgoh and a form of constructive criticism. Congratulations for surpassing Kazakh, as well. I watch (and I am interested) the developments on Uzbek Wikipedia recently, and thus I offer you my advice. Turkic Wikimedia Conference 2023

From October 20 to October 22, 2023, Wikimedia Turkic UG, together with Wikimedia UG Turkey, will organize the second Turkic Wikimedia Conference in Istanbul, Turkey.

Turkic Wikimedia Conference is an annual gathering of Wikimedians and supporters of Wikimedia projects in Turkic languages. The conference aims to bring together all the people who work on Wikimedia projects and support the development of projects and the Wikimedia Movement on a local and global level. Today, more than 200 million people speak Turkic languages, and the geography of the speakers unites Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Central Asia, China, and Russia. On this basis, the development and support of communities of Turkic-speaking Wikimedians are critical.

All Turkic communities and affiliations have the right to send their delegates to the conference, the costs of which will be covered by Wikimedia Turkic UG. The delegate selection process and all other relevant information are on the registration page. Please read it carefully. The deadline for registering delegates from communities and affiliations is July 20.

Self-funded individuals and other non-delegate participants may register until July 31st.

MinT Machine Translation added to your Wikipedia

The WMF Language team has added another machine translation (MT) system for Content Translation in your Wikipedia called MinT; you can use MinT machine translation when translating Wikipedia articles using the Content and Section Translation tool.

The WMF Language team provides the MinT service. It is hosted in the Wikimedia Foundation Infrastructure with neural machine translation models that other organizations have released with an open-source license. MinT integrates translation based on NLLB-200, OpusMT, IndicTrans2 and Softcatalà. This MT is set as optional in your Wikipedia. Still, you can choose not to use it by selecting "Start with empty paragraph" from the "Initial Translation" dropdown menu.

Since MinT is hosted in the WMF Infrastructure and the models are open source, it adheres to Wikipedia's policies about attribution of rights, your privacy as a user and brand representation. You can find more information about the MinT machine translation and the models on this page.

Please note that the use of the MinT MT is not compulsory. However, we would want your community to:

• use it to improve the quality of the Machine Translation service
• provide feedback about its quality, and if you prefer the MinT machine translation as default in your Wikipedia.

Deploying the Phonos in-line audio player to your Wiki

This wiki will soon be able to use the inline audio player implemented by the Phonos extension. This is part of fulfilling a wishlist proposal of providing audio links that play on click.

With the inline audio player, you can add text-to-speech audio snippets to wiki pages by simply using a tag:

The above tag will show the text next to a speaker icon, and clicking on it will play the audio instantly without taking you to another page. A common example where you can use this feature is in adding pronunciation to words as illustrated on the English Wiktionary below.

A new feature is coming to your wiki soon: Reference Previews are popups for references. Such popups have existed on wikis as local gadgets for many years. Now there is a central solution, available on all wikis, and consistent with the PagePreviews feature.

Reference Previews will be visible to everyone, including readers. If you don’t want to see them, you can opt out. If you are using the gadgets Reference Tooltips or Navigation Popups, you won’t see Reference Previews unless you disable the gadget.

Reference Previews have been a beta feature on many wikis since 2019, and a default feature on some since 2021. Deployment is planned for November 22.
